About Dr. Baker
Since 2003 the focus of Dr. Baker's Victoria practice is primarily in oculoplastic and cataract surgery – both functional and cosmetic. He is noted for his meticulous attention to detail, his creative approach to reconstructive surgery and his development of novel surgical techniques.
Dr. Stephen Baker has an impressive medical background which was developed as a result of a love for medicine, a holistic caring approach to patient care and a desire to challenge himself in developing new skills. His creative approach has led to the development of novel surgical techniques. Dr. Baker completed his medical training in 1986 and practiced for five years as a general practitioner to remote communities in Northern Manitoba, with two years of focused practice in the area of emergency medicine and intensive care in Winnipeg.
Through this work, Dr. Baker developed a fascination with Ophthalmology and Ophthalmic Plastic Surgery. He completed his Ophthalmology residency training at the University of Tennessee in Memphis in 1999, which is one of the top ranked surgical programs.
He followed this with two subspecialty fellowships. The first was in neuro-ophthalmic, orbit and oculoplastic surgery in Detroit Michigan. He was then accepted to train as a Fellow of the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ASOPRS) and further advanced his skills as an oculoplastic surgeon at the University of Toronto. In 1998 he was accepted into the prestigious ASOPRS society (http://www.asoprs.org/).
As an ophthalmology specialist he deals specifically with eyelids, lacrimal (tear) systems and the orbital area of the eye. Dr. Baker also has extensive training and expertise in cataract surgery, as well as plastic surgery using the most advanced aestehtic, plastic and reconstructive surgical techniques for the eye, eyelid and brow area.
Dr. Baker is an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of British Columbia. He has also served as the past president of the Canadian Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
